🕵️♂️ The Case of the Water Pump That Wouldn't Sleep...
Imagine this: You go to start your car in the morning, and the battery is stone-dead. You jump-start it, drive all day, everything seems fine, but two days later? Dead again. We recently had a vehicle in the shop suffering from this exact intermittent parasitic drain. The culprit? An electric water pump that decided it didn't want to turn off when the car was parked.
🔍 The Investigation
A lot of shops would see a pump staying on and immediately throw a new one at it. But these pumps aren't cheap, and we don't like guessing with our customers' money.
Step 1: We checked the wiring harness. Result? Perfect. No shorts, no chafing, no green crusty connectors.
Step 2: We hooked up the PicoScope to monitor the LIN Bus signal (Image 1). This is the "digital conversation" between the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and the pump, telling it exactly how fast to run.
Step 3: We waited. And waited.
💡 The "Aha!" Moment
After nearly an hour of the engine running, things got interesting. As the water pump reached operating temperature, the internal electronics began to fail.
The Fault: Look at the waveforms. In Image 1, you can see the digital chatter of the LIN Bus. But as the pump got warm, that signal would suddenly short to 12V and stay there (Image 2).
The Result: Because the communication line "froze," the pump stayed stuck in its last command—running indefinitely until the battery was drained flat.
✅ Diagnosis: Confirmed.
